Sources

Where the numbers come from.

Two public sources and one private one. Steam reviews tell you what people thought of a game after buying it. Reddit request threads tell you what they wanted and could not find. The lab tells you what this game actually does when the same seeded night is played sixteen times.

Method

How the harvest was done, and where it is weak.

Steam

  1. Source: Steam's public review endpoint, English reviews only, no login. One page every 0.6 seconds.
  2. The first sweep, on 2026-08-26, pulled 4,370 negative reviews across seven titles, up to 800 each. The second, on 2026-08-29, ran several cursor walks per title (different sort orders and purchase types) and combined them until each side stopped producing new reviews: 72,908 reviews across ten titles.
  3. Each review is weighted 1 + ln(1 + helpful votes). A review that a hundred people marked helpful counts about five and a half times one that nobody voted on.
  4. Themes are regular expressions run over the review text. A review can match several themes, and a heavily voted review can top more than one category. You can see this in the first sweep's quote lists, where one Death Must Die review leads four categories.
  5. Median hours is the median lifetime playtime of the reviewers who raised a theme. We use it to tell early churn from problems that veterans hit.

Reddit

  1. Source: Arctic Shift, the open successor to Pushshift, walked from each subreddit's first post to September 2026. Reddit's official API caps a listing at a thousand items and cannot walk history, so this was the only complete route.
  2. Eight communities: the four genre subreddits and the subreddits of four games from the Steam set, so the two atlases can be compared. Megabonk has no established subreddit and is missing here.
  3. Demand is counted only inside request threads, detected by phrases like looking for, recommend me, or is there a game where. Everything else is opinion about games people already played and is reported separately.
  4. Depth and shallowness are tagged per sentence. Reasons for quitting are counted only in sentences containing a quit verb.
  5. The per-community reports were carried through a repository cleanup and their numbers have not been re-run since. Read them as directional.

Mobile-only comparators (Archero, Survivor.io, Soul Knight, Magic Survival) are not on Steam and have no usable archive, so they are absent from the numbers even though they influenced the touch controls.
